need help with a wireless router/modem
 

my girlfriends dad has reserved this router/modem from pc world

however i need to know if it will be ok with there aol broadband connection and sharing that broadband connection to my girlfriends sister's laptop

please somebody help as im going to take a lot of stick for suggesting him to buy it if it doesnt work! :Yikes:

i would say yes since it has a inbuilt Modem.

and DAM*, that s a really good price for a wireless router!

yeah its a really good price,thats why i suggested it as my girlfriends father refuses to pay £65 for the netgear modem/router aolHELL suggest

linksys routers are generally good and easy to use. i just bought a 3com from amazon and that took me 3 hours to set it all up (bcos the firmware needs to be upgraded first)

just to check- your g/f's family do have AOL over ADSL, not AOL over ntl cable don't they?

yes they have aol over adsl,ive got ntl 10mb been trying to get them to get ntl but they are tied into a 12 month contract with aol :(

To be honest, although I loathe both companies, AOL will probably deliver what they need.

If there is a good chance that they will eventually swap to cable rather than ADSL for their broadband, don't get a router that has an ADSL modem integral. You won't be able to use that on cable. Better in that case to get a standard broadband wireless router, and connect a separate ADSL ethernet modem to it.

Seems good to me, though AOL screen names do have issues with routers/sharing.

A decent broadband ISP would be able to supply the ethernet rather than USB modem. Some may charge for the priviledge rather than offering a "freebie" USB one, but to be honest, even if I had a single PC rather than a network, I'd want an ethernet rather than USB based modem.

As it is a quick :google: shows that many such standalone ADSL modems exist (get an ADSL-2 compatible one if buyin now, ensuring it is also comaptible with standard ADSL).
