Trouble with Outlook.Exp getting mail from Wanadoo...

Hi,
Trying to set up another my email account ... 'Wanadoo'
on Outlook Express, (isp - fibreoptic cable from ntl)
but it keeps getting rejected, and i can't see why.
A while ago Freeserve changed into Wanadoo, and they
changed my email name from 'John' to 'member'
my account at Freeserve/Wanadoo is still current, but
retrieving mail from ntl through Outlook Express is turning
out to be troublesome.
I am logging on to the Wanadoo site, to check email on that
account. I am sure that i should be able to set up Outlook
Express, but i have tried all the ways that the other accounts
are set up, i must be missing something.
Any help would be welcome,
John :)

Re: Trouble with Outlook.Exp getting mail from Wanadoo...

You won't be able to send email via the Wanadoo servers if you are connecting via ntl. You'll have to set the smtp service to "smtp.ntlworld.com" for the ntl account. It's a security thing imposed by most ISPs to reduce spam problems.

As for receipt, if the email account is still live it should work provided you have the right settings for the wanadoo account, i.e. account name, server, etc.

You could use the webmail feature on the Wanadoo homepage for a temporary fix until you can get the ntlworld email set up, and your contacts informed of the change of address.

Just a suggestion :)

Re: Trouble with Outlook.Exp getting mail from Wanadoo...

Hi Rob C, and Hi TW_BUS_DATA_TECH,

First off i should apologise for getting my post wrong,
Its not the retrieving of email, its the sending thats my problem,
as correctly mentioned the recieving works ok.
I will try setting the SMTP as described, hopefully that will be ok,
but i don't know how it would look at the other end ... from NTL
or from Wanadoo.
As mentioned, i could go to the Wanadoo mail page to send mail from
Wanadoo, if it were necessary for some reason, but i generally stick
to using Outlook Expresss, but it aggravates me that every time it
checks my mail for me, it can't send any through that account.
Yet i think it does send ok through other accounts, which is odd.
I will set it as described, and send myself a mail or two, i read
somewhere not to use the words 'Check' or 'Test' as the title cos
these are filtered out by many e-mail handlers. Dunno how true that
is, but i will use different titles anyway.
Thank you both for your advice, i will let you know how i get on,

Regards, John :)

Re: Trouble with Outlook.Exp getting mail from Wanadoo...

It is a common thing for most ISPs to block the sending of email through their own servers unless you are directly connected to them. The alternative is that they will need some level of password authentication, something you only nornmally get if you have a hosted domain and mail service.

As far as I can tell, provided you have the email account setup properly in Outlook Express, especially the email address and reply to address as your wanadoo one, the recipient will not realise you have sent through ntl, beleiving you have used the wanadoo account, unless they do a more detailed check and look at the mail headers. The critical thing, for you is that if they reply to the email, or add you to their address book is they will have your wanadoo email addy, not an ntl one.

Hi,
Yes, that seems ok.
I looked at the details of the email i sent to myself,
and it does give the return path as my Wanadoo address,
unexpectedly it also gives the name of my personal computer
and what looks like an identifying IP number.
I didn't expect to see that.
All seems well now,
Cheers, John :)
