Unable to surf internet, and IP addy has changed

Hi - I'm wondering if anyone could provide assistance to my internet problems.

Everytime I try to connect to the internet now, it says 'Page Cannot be displayed' I have noticed that before my IP Address did start with 213.***.**.***, now starts with 169.254.***.***.

I did try following the guide at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jayone/...2_ethernet.htm but the middle LED light on the STB never stays solid, it just keeps flashing.

I've also tried to ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew but always get "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out." message.

I also cannot access the http://start.ntl/ and http://autoreg.autoregister.net/ pages.

Will I need to call Technical Support to get my Broadband back online?

Yes

If the middle light is flashing then you have no modem lock on your STB. A call from a faults tech will be required to check your STB and Feed.

Whenever you see an IP starting 169.254 it means you have no active connection and Windoze was unable to get an IP addy.

Re: Unable to surf internet, and IP addy has changed

To clarify, 169.254.xxx.xxx is the default IP range that Windows falls back to if it isn't allocated one by either your ISP or by a router with DHCP capability.

The range is a reserved IP address range, as others are shown here:
http://tinyurl.com/6puut

If you have a router, then that would allocate IP addys using one of the ranges shown on the page above.

As I've never played with a STB, I presume you've tried rebooting it, maybe levaing it off for a while between reboots?

Sorry I can't help much.

I want my 213.***.**.*** addy back! lol

Thanks, your replies, have pretty much confirmed what I suspected. A call to technical support, required. Cheers :)
