Re: Router Question

Click "Quick Links", then "New speed test".

Or use my personal favourite, Dam Elwill's Broadband speed test (http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net), which is a program that tests your connection.

What version BEFSRV41? V1 and 2 have a basic 10Mbps half duplex WAN port an a processor that can't pass more than about 5Mb! Later versions do have a 100 WAN port but I have never seen a display on linksys setup pages to say what it connects at. I don't know if you can tell from the STB.

Re: Router Question

Actually, that's not what he's after, Stuart. He wants the rate at which his router is connected to the STB. ;-)

inviroman, enter http://192.168.1.1/ into your browser, and enter 'admin' as the password (no username) if you haven't previously changed this. That'll get you into your router settings; you may be able to find the info there. Incidentally, if your router password is still set at 'admin,' it would be a good idea to change it while you're doing this.

Re: Router Question

If you have a v3 BEFSR41 router, the WAN port is 10/100, whereas, as mmm pointed out, v1 and v2 only had a 10Mb Wan port. However, I know that STB's (even the Samsung) are not fully 10Mb internet connection capable, and I think this may be because they don't have a 10/100 ethernet port (not sure on that). If that's the case, you'll be connected to it at 10Mb, not 100.

Re: Router Question

Look on the front of the router. According to the manual (which I have just downloaded from Linksys), there is a light on the front labelled 100. If this is lit up in orange, it's a 100 Meg connection. If not, it's a 10 meg.

However, IIRC, patrickp is right. The Samsung does have an 100 Meg port, but NTL locked all the ports on the STBs to 10 Meg.

the '100 meg' light is for the LAN side, though, Stu - however, as you say, if the STB is locked down to 10 Meg it doesn't matter how fast the router tries to talk to it, that will be the bottleneck ;)
