Router Help

Hello. I am BIG noob when it comes to this. I seriously need help.
I recently purchased a laptop along with a wireless router. I already have a computer with a broadband connection. So, I put the wireless card connector (whatever it's called) inside the laptop and installed it using the installation disc I recieved with it.
I plugged the actual router into the broadband internet box (which is connected to the computer), and it seems to have successfully connected. Now for the problem. It seems that the laptop has picked up the signal but won't actually connect to the internet.
I tried using a few wizards but I was unsuccessful with those.

The computer the laptop is trying to connect to, is currently running with Windows XP: Home Edition and it has a 2MB NTL broadband connection.
The laptop is running on Windows XP: Pro Edition.
My friend said, if I was unsuccessful with installing the router and getting nowhere, to come here. So here I am.:)
So, can anyone help me with this router problem?

Thanks.

P.S. Like I said, I am a bit of a noob so please be patient.:)

Did you switch the modem off before connecting the router?

are you using an encryption for the wireless connection - if you have mis-typed the key into either the router or laptop, it will be able to see it fine, but it won't connect.

Or, if you goto the propertites of the wireless card in the laptop, scroll down to internet protocol (under the general tab) and again click on properties. This should be set as obtain IP address automatically.

What you may need to do (like me) is to connect the lappy to the router via a cable and set up the wirless options then uplug the cables.

below is a file that will help you make your wireless connection secure.

I don't have a SACM myself, but am I correct in thinking they have a USB port and an ethernet port? If so, perhaps the OP has the computer plugged into the USB port and the router plugged into the ethernet port, in which case the PC needs to be plugged into a LAN port on the router, then power everything off, power on the cable modem ('broadband box'), wait for lights to settle. Power on router, wait for lights to settle. Power on PCs.
