AOL & Routers

My friend is on AOL and they have ADSL from them. At the moment they currently have just the one PC connected via the modem provided by AOL. Now at Christmas he is getting a laptop and wants to have it connected by a wireless router and has been looking around at all the different ones available and lots of people have advised him that not many work with AOL can someone provide me some that do work?

Thanks

A majority of ADSL router will work, he needs the have a spare screenname though. When setting up the router enter the username for the ISP as <screenname>@aol.com (with any capital letters), VCP should be set to 0 and VCI should be set to 38. The MTU should be set to 1400. AOL say routers won't work on their silver service but it will if you don't use the AOL software on your machine. DLink, Belkin, Linksys, BT and other routers not 'supported' by AOL have all be setup fine on their service. If you want to make absolutely certain the get the Netgear DG834G as AOL support this.

Hi I am actually setting up a friends wireless network who is also on AOL platium and with AOL Speed touch router....

BOY oh BOOY tell your mate to think of getting a new service provider I have never used AOL before and have set up many wireless networks but they are stupid and really a hassle to install, config, troubleshoot. I was unfortunate enough to get a phone call from a friend who had just jumped into a 12month contract with them with a router. I had kick punch and scream at the Customer service for hours to get a the routers IP address as it was not documented anywhere. after hours on the phone @ 60p per min finely got it connected but now for some reason exactly 1 week and it conks out...

hope that helps

Well, according to this post, AOL have advice available. Boot up the AOL software and go to keyword "Home Networking".

There are also instructions for the Speedtouch 545 (but they should be easy to adapt for other routers) at http://www-stg.aolsvc.co.uk/help/Speed545.htm

a slight aside is is worth noting that presently you cannot use a router on the AOL broadband over NTL cable service.*

* you can, but it is v complicated and involves setting up your own proxy server
