2MB Connection = 25 KB/s :(

Why is my connection running so darn slow?

Everytime i phone NTL they say some stuff about spyware but i've run 3 different spyware softwares (adaware, spybot and spyware doctor) and my connection is dreadfully slow.

It's like this at all times and has been going on for weeks now. I have ntl digital and that is running fine.

Im in the UK, XP SP2, Running the net through a netgear router using the cable modem (non-stb) then going from the router via ethernet then into a usb adapter. (bear in mind i used to use the usb and the speeds were great still). No firewall although there is the hardware built-in one on the router.

Heres a screencap of a download from my high-speed server (others download off it at the right, great speeds):
http://www.scenepromote.co.uk/wtf.jpg

I get the same speeds all over from places like download.com and everywhere else.

robin.d.h.walker speed test:
Sun, 18 Dec 2005 17:23:32 UTC
1st 128K took 500 ms = 262144 Bytes/sec = approx 2181 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec

PLEASE HELP!!! I'm sick of these poor speeds. :td:

---------- Post added at 17:29 ---------- Previous post was at 17:22 ----------

hmm then ADSLguide goes and says:

Direction
Actual Speed
True Speed (estimated)
Downstream7101 Kbps (887.6 KB/sec)7669 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream491 Kbps (61.4 KB/sec)530 Kbps (inc. overheads)

im sooooo confused :(

Re: 2MB Connection = 25 KB/s :(

make sure there are no ghost programs running in the background.
like programs that auto download stuff, file sharing progs that you did not know auto started.

If that does not work try plugging the same conection into a different computer, that way it will make sure the connection is not at fault.
Try running antivirus scan.

However, please try the speed test in our Quick Links section (top right, on the navigation bar).

and then zdnet's speed test says:

Your line speed:

4340.4 Kbps

531.9 K bytes/sec </I>

1st 512K took 1531 ms = 334.4 KB/sec, approx 2755 Kbps, 2.69 Mbps
2nd 512K took 7344 ms = 69.7 KB/sec, approx 574 Kbps, 0.56 Mbps
3rd 512K took 7500 ms = 68.3 KB/sec, approx 563 Kbps, 0.55 Mbps
4th 512K took 2484 ms = 206.1 KB/sec, approx 1698 Kbps, 1.66 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1398 Kbps, 1.37 Mbps

---------- Post added at 17:46 ---------- Previous post was at 17:38 ----------

ok for a start both your zdnet and adslguide speedtest are showing speeds way above what 2mbit service provides and seems to indicate you are on 10mbit. The ntl speedtest shows speeds superb for 2mbit.

I was thinking that as well. Those reading's are for a 10 meg service not a 2meg.

??????

Using wireless by any chance? Just noticing the average 11ms ping to your router, which frankly sucks :(

usb connections can be poor as they use a lot of cpu.

that one doesnt look like 10mb to me.

regardless, why are my downloads still a dreadful speed?

p.s. if i use a download manager, e.g. flashget, i CAN reach my usualt speed of around 230KB/s

ill have to find my mobo's disc as i think the ethernet port i hve isnt installed :(

---------- Post added at 16:06 ---------- Previous post was at 15:52 ----------

right, installed ethernet. it feels like the net is quicker but i tried to download something off a fast server and its still getting a poor mid 20-30kb/s.

a download manager will get me 230kb/s though.

maybe i need a reformatt? seems that windows or internet explorer is somehow not working very well?

If a download manager is getting you normal speeds give this a pop:

7.5mbit down and 0.5mbit up, looks like ntl 10mbit from here.

You don't say which type of cable modem you are using.
You may be able to see what service you are on by going here http://192.168.100.1/ & clicking on "operation configuration". The downstream & upstream data rates will let you know what speed you are on.
Username & password = root.

Has your download speed always been slow since getting ntl broadband? If so, it could be due to windows RWIN value being set too low. If it is, the link in Ignition's post will sort it out.

oh also, on that tweak website, what speed should i say my connection is? should i say its 2mb or what seems to be 10mb?

---------- Post added at 22:56 ---------- Previous post was at 22:25 ----------

right, tried the rwin thing after using that tweak site saying im 2mb and it seems to have worked, thanks. so im getting like 230kb/s now. question is, should i be getting higher speeds as its quoting me as having a 10mb line? should i get rwin settings for 10mn and try them?

From your modem readings, you are on the 2Meg service as you originally said. It's strange how you got those other readings that indicated you were on 10Meg

230kB/s (kiloBytes per second) is about the right download speed for the 2Meg service.
