Help with start up message and firewall
 

Hi,

I'm new to this board and firstly want to thank everyone who has posted for helping put the excitement back into getting a new computer. :)

After struggling to install the NTL c.d., I followed some friendly advice from this forum and have managed to get online- hurray. I have 2 remaining problems that I hope someone may be able to help or direct me towards someone that can.

Everytime I start my computer I get a message

"Please insert your cd rom with the virtual truck program looking for file D:\installs\PaceEth\vtruck.exe

Does this mean anything significant and is there anyway I can get rid of this?

Secondly when I finally got going and re-enabled my firewall (the one that comes with Norton Internet security 2005), I was unable to connect to server again. So I can only actually get online when I disable my firewall- obvously not good in the long term.

Could this be that my firewall is blocking the http port that my browser needs to connect to get on line? If so I think I know how to tell the firewall to let the correct port through. My question is the http port used linked to my PC, NTL or the specific webpages I visit? How do I find out which port my computer needs to allow access through?

Thanks for any help anyone may be able to offer and sorry for being so unaware of these things

(it says win98 or ME, but XP shouldn't be much different)

you need to tell your firewall to let your browser access the internet. I don't use Norton, but it should be a case of clicking a few buttons in an application area within Norton's firewall

Firstly :welcome: to CF

Secondly, if you are using an ethernet connection you shouldn't need to use the NTL software anyway! To solve the vtruck problem, read Robin Walker's notes here.

Firewalls do not normally block browser ports, but if you want to check, see if it's blocking iexplore.exe or port 80 & 443. Is the firewall blocking everything, eg lockdown mode? To test, try 'tracert www.bbc.co.uk' from a dos prompt'
