wifi/cable share

Hi
have had TW BB wirelessly connected to a laptop for 18 months
connected via set top box and netgear router supplied by TW
Tw tell me I cannot use both in conjunction
can connect on laptop wifi or on new Pc cabed direct from set top
TW tell me can only use one connection at a time( have to reboot ST box to change connections)
how can I get them both connected?

Moved to computers and IT forum.

Right.. Done that..

Now, :welcome: to Cableforum.

We actually have an article that should help you a lot (it was written about NTL, but should apply to Telewest as well).

Assuming it is a true Router, you could have (theortetically) hundreds of devices connected. It should certainly cope with two.

Have a look at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=39

When you have it working, it's also worth having a look at http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=12 to find out how to secure the network.

I think the "Wireless Routers" that Telewest Supply are little more than Wireless Access Points with NAT

I beleive you are correct. Basically the Telewest Netgear "router" simply channels the internet to wireless, but will only support a single computer at a time.

Sorry, but it's time to scrap the Telewest Netgear thing and get a fully spec'd wireless router instead.

Is it even a router or is it just a WAP?

I think it is a router with a crippled configuration so that it will only allow one connection at a time. If it were a WAP then the Telewest STB / modem, would itself get confused as it would only see the netgear, and no IP addy would get issued to the connected computer?
