www.tomtom.com

Hi All,

I just got a new Tom Tom GO 300 for my birthday... Woooo hooo, and tried to use there website ( www.tomtom.com ). When I try and use it it is sooooooooooo slow.... I tried changing proxy server and its still slow. Other sites seem to work ok, does anyone else have the same problem?

I am in Bracknell area (RG12).

Also what is the quickest way to find out if I have the 10Mb service? I had a letter from NTL saying I was going to be one of the first, but I haven' tnoticed much improvement in overall performance.

Cheers

This is the speed I am getting....

Sun, 11 Dec 2005 18:10:44 UTC

1st 512K took 985 ms = 519.8 KB/sec, approx 4283 Kbps, 4.18 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1298 ms = 394.5 KB/sec, approx 3251 Kbps, 3.17 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1079 ms = 474.5 KB/sec, approx 3910 Kbps, 3.82 Mbps
4th 512K took 1188 ms = 431 KB/sec, approx 3551 Kbps, 3.47 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3749 Kbps, 3.66 Mbps

To repeat this test from the source server click here.

I assume this means I'm not on 10Mb yet....

Note : I am on a 802.11b wireless network, but that should run at up to 10Mbs

Nope, sorry. You wont get over 5Mbps on a wireless network that has any "b" devices connected to it.

Just to say that the tomtom website is slow here for me too, everywhere else seems fine, proxy thing?

:erm: 5Mbps is not going to cause a speed problem for browsing. Are your speeds constant if you keeps re running the speed test?

Try running a trace to the tom tom site

Well I get 8 to 9Mbps with a Wireless B network. I guess it depends on how old the router design is, how good your signal is and the distance from the router.

What modem do you have ?
What speeds do you get when directly connected to the modem ?

I have a Netgear MR814 version 2 with a Netgear MA401 connected to it. I thought the speed was 10Mps per second on 80211b ... When I look at my network connection it shows 10Mps and about 43% utilitised when I run the speed tests. I I haven't tried connecting directly because the PC and the modem are in different locations.

BTW - I tried the tom tom site again tonight, still very slow even when changing my proxy to brhm-cache-9.server.ntli.net

oh also I ran the speed test multiple times, it is always roughly the same as posted.

Try a lower number for the proxy

The 11Mbps capabilities of an 11-b wireless router doesn't include *a lot* of overheads. Realistically you lose over 50% of the available bandwidth on these overheads, however companies have always, and will always, quote in signalling rate not the useful bandwidth.
