stand alone modem & set top box together
My set top box was giving problems and disconnecting my broadband service a while ago,I asked for a stand alone modem and an engineer prompltly arrived and installed it.
However I would like to move my modem now to an upstairs location as I can connect upstairs also but I noticed the modem is also connected to the set top box as well and when I disconnect the cable modem from the set top box I lose my interner connection. Why would they connect/configure a stand alone modem with the set top box? |
Re: stand alone modem & set top box together
what I assume they have done is split the cable, all data for TV & Internet are present on the same cable, so they split it & fit an isolator to 'select' the frequency range required for TV or Internet.
It is generally advised that customers don't try to extend cable connections, themselves, as power levels may need adjusting to cope with the extra attenuation, plus faulty termination can cause problems for the rest of the network. - unfortunately, as far as I know, NTL will charge to send an engineer out to do it 'properly'. - it may be worthwhile considering a wireless solution, for example a wireless router??? |

i always thought a stand alone had its own feed in.........?
other wise it wouldnt be a stand alone it would be stand alone via set top box lol |

without seeing the installation, it is hard to say why the STB & SACM appear to be connected other than via a splitter??? |

Re: stand alone modem & set top box together
why move the modem, when you can do a Cat5 cable install or wireless yourself? (Unless your conecting to it via USB!)

Re: stand alone modem & set top box together
did you get your modem for free and if so what did you say because when i asked for a modem, as i currently have the same disconnection problems, they said i had to pay about £50 for it which i think is really stupid as they didnt even ask if i wanted a stand alone modem when i first got broadband
