Another PC added to my network

Is there anyway I can restrict the access to my oldest lads computer from my router? He's downloading loads of films, he's just downloaded 3 versions of grand theft auto, he's going to get me hung by NTL if he carries on like he is, there's no point in talking to him because he'll just do it more, Ive tried taking the cable out of the back of the router but he just puts it back in again.

Take_both_ ends of the cable out and take it away, Nidge! ;-)

Depends what the router is; some routers will control individual connections. RTFM! Go into the router configuration and see what it does, and do one other thing while you're doing that - change the password before no. 1 son discovers that _he_ could do that as well, and stop you...

If you router supports it, only allow your mac address for access

How will I know which connection is which?

How do I access the router settings?

You mean a Linksys then? :D I dont have one myself, best thing is to look through the config for "Access Control" or something similar unless anyone else can come up with something better.

If its a linksys, you could do this, although I'm sure others let you too.
Set the main router config page password to only one you know.
Then log in to the router and take his Pc out of the list of permitted connections.

192.168.1.1 will let u access the config page. If you haven't changed the password, it will be admin...leave the username bit blank

try 192.168.2.1

Also check the router documentation too.

LinkSys routers default user and passwords are admin/admin as far as my knowledge goes.

Hope this helps.

but theres always the rest button on the back for if you dont know the password, however it will reset all of the routers settings to the factory defaults.

And after doing all that with the router keep checking to see how often the router goes offline when you have been out and he unplugs it from the modem and connects his PC direct to the modem with the spare patch lead he has lying about.
