ADSL wifi Router - compatible with Telewest?

Hi, I have just moved house and signed up with telewest broadband - the problem is that I can't connect to the net via wifi. I own a 3Com Officeconnect ADSL wifi router which I bought when I had Bulldog ADSL at my old house.

I have connected my Mac desktop to the router with a lan cable and connected the router to the cable modem with another lan cable. I can connect to the internet fine through the desktop BUT when I try and connect to the internet via wifi with my laptop, it desn't work!

There is definitely a wifi signal and I can configure the router with my laptop by going to the IP address but it asks me to enter ADSL username and password which obviously wouldn't work with telewest.

Can anyone suggest anything? The telewest guys say that the ADSL wifi routers are not supported but surely if I can connect through the router with the desktop then I should be able to connect with the wifi?

Thanks in advance

Wesley

Hi, :welcome: to CF!

Unfortunately, if your ADSL router has an ADSL modem built-in, it's unlikely to accept any other connection as the Internet, so you will need to get a new one. It may be working with the desktop by operating as a hub rather than a router.

Thanks for the quick reply Jimbo. I guess I have to buy a new router. Bugger!

Yeah, I know - the good news is that an Ethernet-based router that will work on ntl/Telewest will also work on ADSL if you have an Ethernet-based modem; so you should only need to change once!

And you never know, you might be able to sell the old router on eBay!

If you look about you should find the linksys wrt54g a good router to use. :)
