Cannot send email through wireless network

I am new to the forum so thanks for reading my Post.
I am using a laptop through a Wireless network and am unable to send or receive email.
I have set up my NTLWORLD email account in Outlook (no outlook express). When I use the "Test account settings..." I get messages saying ....

"The Specified server was found but there was no response from the server. Check Port and SSL information is correct."

The Port and SSL settings are the same as my desktop PC where the email works fine. I'm not sure if this is anything to do with accessing via the network but I have run out of ideas.

Any help would be gratefully received.
Regards, Tony E

Thanks for the quick response.

I can get to the Internet OK, so I don't think it is the WiFI, but I did wonder if there may be a setting somewhere causing the problem.

Unfortunately I am using Outlook 2000 on the PC and Outlook 2003 on the Laptop, not ideal I know!

There is another unfortunate, in as much as I am using Norton Internet Security Firewall. 2004 on the PC and 2005 on the Laptop.
Regards
Tony E.

You can try ruling out Norton by disabling it before trying to send the e-mail. I presume you have a router on your network, so disabling the firewall temporarily is not a problem.

Brilliant, I didn't actually rule it out, I ruled it right in! Norton Firewall is the guilty party but I don't know what to do now.
I have added Outlook to the "Permitted" List of Programs (but this seems to rete to Internet access), I have added the address from the Network to the Trusted zone under Networks, and added a General Rule under the Advanced Firewall tab to allow comunication to and from the IP address.
Should any of these have fixed the problem? or do I have to leave the Firewall disabled on the network ? If so how am I protected by the router?
Sorry, I thought I understood these things a bit better.

I would probably think it would be the firewall causing this, as mentioned disable the Norton one, try it again, if it doesn't work try enabling DMZ on your router for your laptop IP address and see if that works.

Re: Cannot send email through wireless network

well I think I may have solved it, although it goes against the grain a little.
I am thinking more and more that I should not have bothered with NIS.

I have moved the Firewall slider down to "Low" from medium and that seems to have done the trick.

I have downloaded Zone Alarm Firewall and AVG anti-virus and I think I will load them up when my NIS subscription runs out at the end of the year (if not before)

PS. It's all good learning material, thanks for you help guys!

Did you have an XP firewall running? You need to disable this if using NIS I think.

Moved to Computers and IT, as this is not an NTL or Telewest service issue.

I had the same problem as you after running a live update on NIS. It's the adding of the IP address to the trusted network that fixes it, in my case I added the name rather than the IP just in case the ISP changes their IP addresses!.

The NIS support function (Start - programmes - NIS - Support is very helpful in fixing these kinds of issues.....

Thanks guys. Problem solved.
I'm really not a fan of NIS anymore. I think I will have to change when I come up for renewal. I am thinking of going for AVG or Zonelarm or maybe AVG for Anti-Virus and Zonealarm for the firewall. Have to check out the relative costs.
Thanks

Re: Cannot send email through wireless network

I don't use any firewall at all since my router has a proper one built in. I use the free agg and have as yet not had a virus in years.

I hate norton with a vengance its one of the most overrated heaps, especially when its pre-installed because its a pain to remove.
