Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
I've been asked by a non-techie relative to set up a wireless network on her Freeserve broadband connection. The PC connects to a box marked "Thomson Speedtouch 330", then to a splitter device ( via a socket marked ADSL, the other socket to telephone), which then plugs into the telephone point in the wall.
I asked Wannadoo if I could plug the Thomson Speedtouch 330 device into a wireless 802.11g router, and they were kind enough to send me a reply, albeit to a different question. A follow-up email just said that they wouldn't support this (which again wasn't the question that I asked). Can this be done, or am I committed to using their setup? Alan |
Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
when they say they can't support it, they mean they cannot offer help for any issues arising from you connecting to a router...
you just have to choose the right router ;) |
Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
I know what they mean, and I accept that they won't offer support. What they don't say is whether it will work. They mention an 802.11g router ( which I knew), and suggest that I rent a "Livebox" from them. That doesn't answer my question, which is whether I can set it up by plugging a router into the Thomson Speedtouch 330 and not bother with a Livebox.
Any other thoughts? Alan |
Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
The Thomson Speedtouch 330 is USB-based, so you can't connect it to a wireless router. However, what you can do is buy a wireless router with an ADSL modem built-in. This reduces the number of boxes hanging around, and will do the job for you, usually with minimal setup. :)

Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
Thank you, you are a star!
There seems to be an RJ11 socket ( or similar) on the Thomson device, not a USB socket, but I'll have another look when I go round there. Alan |
Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
There wouldn't be a USB socket - as I remember, the USB cable is hardwired into the modem, and this is what connects it to the PC.

You are an even bigger star, thanks and goodnight

Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
you will have to bin the thompson 330 (best thing you'll ever do)
buy a router that has a adsl modem built in. Wanadoo tech support will not support your connection using the router so make sure the 330 is around as a 'test' modem. However they will provide you with the required settings. I used to work for them but I have long since binned all my stuff. A quick google will find them if you prefer not to have to phone them. hm |
Re: Freeserve / Wannadoo problem
