Crazy Lights
Basically i started to have slow downloads.
The average speed are: Download Speed: 280 kbps (35 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 68 kbps (8.5 KB/sec transfer rate) http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/l...d=280&u=68&s=8 I am on a 1MB connection. I have noticed the U/S and D/S lights are constantly on. When i unplugg the modem and reboot it the speed is fine then it starts to detoriate. |
Re: Crazy Lights
How odd. Have you checked your signal levels by rebooting the modem and going to http://192.168.100.1 (username: root, password: root)?
If you're not sure, have a flick through the pages and post the results here. :) |
Re: Crazy Lights
Ive tried loging into the modem however i am using a wireless router.

Re: Crazy Lights
Check your machine for spyware. Also check that your wireless network is secure and that noone else is accessing it. It could be that you have a cheeky swine in the neighbourhood who has noticed you have an open access network, and is pinching your bandwidth.

Re: Crazy Lights
I constantly check my computers for adware/spyware.
The wireless has been secure since day 1 as there are quite a few wireless networks in the area. |
Re: Crazy Lights
Securing my wireless networkk at home.how do I do that?
I have a wireless router at home so my missus can browse the web downstairs on her lap top. How do I prevent anyone else accessing my network (and i guess internet connection)? how do i set it up. I have a Belkin wireless router at home, connected to my telewest broadband cable modem. |
Re: Crazy Lights
I think i have found the problem,
I was running a bittorrent client and i just checked and it was running quite high on the download, which is good! However it is obviously effecting my speed, i have moved from AOL where i was able to simultaniously download two things at 100k or so at the same time, on a 1MB connection. Is this not so with NTL? BTW the bitorrent client has been set to max 5 kb/s on the upload |
Re: Crazy Lights
NTL has an upload on the 1MBit connection of about 100kbps whereas your AOL connection would have had an upload of about 256kbps. HTH.

Re: Crazy Lights
You will need to log into you router, using the specified IP.
I am not going to quote one as i have used several to connect to my router, and also i have never used belkin routers. Look in the manual and it should have the steps. Basically you need to create a WPA password. In this case the information sent over the air is encrypted aswell as a password is required access the network. It is important to secure the connection as someone else can misuse your bandwith, they can also undertake criminal activities. If you do not secure your network you are open to abuse. I have sometimes stumbled on other networks, aswell as noticing others in my network. |
Re: Crazy Lights
this may look over the top but use something liek https://www.grc.com/passwords to generate your wpa key then copy this to a text file and burnt it to cd or put it on a usb drive hen you can jsut copy and paste to any new machines you add

Re: Crazy Lights
Is there not an inherent issue regarding cable modems about simultaneous upload and download bringing it to a gentle slowdown?
