New network, which Router?

Hi. I was just wondering if the Linksys BEFSR41 will still be fine to use with NTLs new 10mb speed upgrade because i'll be needing a router come Christmas and this one seems reliable and quite cheap.

Thanx for any help
Richie

As far as I know, there should be no problem using this router.

I'm reasonably sure the BEFSR81 is essentially the same router, just with 8 LAN ports instead of 4 (I didn't want or need 8, but PC World didn't have anything else at the time - go figure). Am I right?

Re: New network, which Router?

not sure, I have one myself & it has given no problems on a 2Mb/s connection, but the spec says the WAN port is 10Mb/s, which if half duplex will not handle a full speed 10Mb/s connection..

<edit> mine is a version 2, btw, I'm not sure if the newer Version 3 models are any different, but it is worth asking the question before splashing the cash...

I think the v3 ones are the same, Gaz, but the BEFSX41 does have a 10/100Mbps WAN port.

Ah, thanks for the info guys. Looks like i'll be buying the BEFSX41 instead, not much more expensive either.

How much kit do you intend to fit to the router.

You can but Hard drives that connect to a router via CAT5

When I bought mine the cheapest I found it for was at www.simply.co.uk - they've changed the name/address recently and are called something like misco now (can't remember exactly) but the web addy is on redirect. Check the prices before buying as they vary considerably!!

PS I have had 3 BEFSX41 (for various reasons) and would certainly recommend it, but be careful with the firmware version you run as there are known issues with some (spent hours reading forums about connection issues and it basically all came down to specific firmware versions with bugs).

I have the "known stable" versions at home if you go ahead with this one and want them sent to you!!

Thanks alot mate. If i do get this one (likely) i would appreciate it. Plus, it doesn't harm knowing someone who has the same router if i ever get stuck ;)

Yeah i see...After some more Googling it does appear that the V3 of this router does have a 10/100 WAN port, but earlier versions do not :erm:

Re: New network, which Router?

My apologies, RichieUK. I based the info of the BEFSR41 v3 on a user manual I downloaded from Linksys earlier this year, which I assumed must be a v3 manual, as the v3's been around for a while - at the time I downloaded it, for instance, it was no longer possible to get anything but v3 firmware from their site.

I've taken another look at that manual and it is indeed for a v2.

The BEFSR41 is an easier router to get on with, so since the v3 does have a 10/100 WAN port, that probably would be the best one for you. Do make sure it is a v3, though! ;-)
