Proxy Server Help

Hello

There is most likely some threads here that will have the answer for me but I currently don't have the time to search through them. I maybe getting NTL Broadband soon but I would also like to be able to use a Proxy Server (if that's correct) to cloak my IP address. Is using a Proxy Server difficult? Does it have any major disadvantages?

Thank you

DM

NTL's internet service has proxies built in and you are forced to use them. I'm not sure that setting one up on your own LAN (presumably that's what you mean?) would make any difference. If your own proxy server had to go out looking for a page it would be forced to use an NTL proxy. The NTL proxy would presumably pick up the IP address assigned to your cable modem, and as NTL's proxies are set up properly, they can pass on the true IP address of the customer making the page request. Which is why I can see the IP you're using right now. ;)

Someone correct me if this is all cockeyed .... :D

I think he's talking about using anonymous proxies, the major downside of which is degraded performance.

IMO, there is no need to use anonymous proxies... if you want to hide it for a good reason, the only way to totally avoid getting caught doing whatever you are is to stay offline and disconnect from the net.

I heard there is also a proxy server which supplies a different IP address for you every time you are online. Is this true? Pardon my ignorance on this particular subject.

admuncher has this feature they have a proxy list and it can run tests to see which are alive, then it can randomly use a different one for each request. But expect very slow performance as a result.

Re: Proxy Server Help

I had a free copy of a steganos proxy randomiser on a coverdisc which can change proxy every 5 seconds if you want it to. The problem with it was (apart from slowing the machine down majorly) that the automatically updating list of proxies it uses contains proxies on port 80, which are useless on ntl, and if you remove them from the list manually it rebuilds itself.
You might try taking a look at the free Jap software as well.

AS i'm rather naÃÃâ€*’ÂÂÂÂ*ve about how all this works (servers etc), could someone please explain why i have an IP and a proxy IP when i click on the connection button at the top of the page. This is just to satisfy a curiosity, to help me understand. Thanks.

NTL use 'Transparent Proxies' to 'speed up' web browsing and reduce traffic. This means that if you surf to bbc.co.uk, your system doesn't communicate direct with the bbc system, you talk to an NTL proxy. If the proxy already has a copy of that page it will send it to you, otherwise it talks to the bbc system on your behalf.

Re: Proxy Server Help

I think in only rare cases it speeds up browsing tho, you would get the most gain if the website was long distance eg. australia or asia. Because you lose advantages such as full http 1.1 compliance and a direct connection to the webserver, and if the proxy doesnt have the page cached which is often the case on dynamic site's such as this forum it will be slower not faster.
