Been signed up to this for a while, its not bad, seems to work quite well looks very bland compared to the old hotmail, but works well, copying gmail slightly, plus you get 2gig of space!

It's all part of Windows Live

I really don't fancy signing up for yet another mail account, but compared with Google Mail is this MSN version better/ worse? Is it as unreliable as MSN messenger and hotmail access at the moment?

Its not actually a separate new email service, its just the new version of Hotmail, but renamed Microsoft mail, well it was for me at least, as I'm still using my hotmail email address.

Google seems to work faster for me, although MS mail is quicker than hotmail generally, its got some good features such as drop and dragging your emails, into folder's, it does block all images on the email unless its an allowed sender, which is good i suppose but also annoying especially when its just a amazon newsletter. I suppose its sort of like an online version of outlook.

Id say try it , you can always opt out of it and go back to the normal hotmail, it generally looks bland as there's not much colour, its mostly white.

Another good feature is you can now search your emails like on gmail, one of the most useful features in my opinion.

As a note i believe you dont recieve any email saying you are in the beta, you just get a green box appear in your hotmail account. As shown below:

Re: Microsoft Mail Beta

as I understand it they probably upgrade current hotmail account since it asks for a msn account to signup with. So you not getting an extra email account but just upgrading a current one.
