MSN Messenger - File Transfer Speed

Hi.

I use MSN Messenger (Version 7.5) to transfer files to and from my contacts. I am on NTL 1MB broadband via a set top box.

When I transfer files to my contacts the transfer speed to them is incredibly slow. A 7mb file takes about 22 minutes to send and I think this is overly slow. A 7mb file from a contact only takes 7 minutes.

Can anyone advise what I can do to speed my file transfers up?

If you need any other infoformation to help please let me know and I will provide it.

Thanks in advance

:)

Even at full speed it would take someone at least 10 minutes to pull a 7MB file from you (assuming your upload is 100kbps) if you are using the pc for other things then it will be even longer.

I timed the 7mb file from a contact and it only took 6 mins and 46 secs. I was not using the PC for other things during this time.

I did a speed test and these were the results:

Downstream: 516kbps

Upstream: 82kbps

I expect the problem lies within the upstream?

Not really, your download speed is a lot higher than your upload speed, it is with everyone, be they on Cable or DSL. We do not have personal symetric options available, so our connections are classed as Asymetric (as far as I know).

your upstream is 'there or there abouts' - it is the downstream that is pants, it should be nearly twice that ;)

There is no real problem with your upstream, 82kbps is reasonable depending on other circumstances, and what site you tested it on. Your downstream seems a bit slow, but again, that could be the site you used. Try this downstram speed test.

Remember that if you are pulling a file from someone else, you are using their upstream, and anyone pulling a file from you is using your upstream speed.

Anyone else having problems logging into MSN messenger tonight, its really slow here and once it has logged in, takes a while to load up the side bar menu.

I've given up this evening...takes ages to get logged in, and then boots you off after 10 mins or so :(

I used the speed test on ADSL Guide and the results are now:

Downstream: 962kbps

Upstream: 80kbps

The upstream has stayed around the same level as earlier.

I ran the other test suggested and the results are as follows:

Sun, 30 Oct 2005 21:23:35 UTC

1st 128K took 1141 ms = 114875 Bytes/sec = approx 956 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1109 ms = 118189 Bytes/sec = approx 983 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1141 ms = 114875 Bytes/sec = approx 956 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1094 ms = 119810 Bytes/sec = approx 997 kbits/sec
