NTL and Windows XP Pro x64
Hi all
Sorry to all if i've posted this in the wrong place but this problem has me at my wits end. Can anybody tell me if my broadband can be installed on xp pro x64 ? I assumed even though there isn't a 64 bit driver from NTL i should be able to install using Microsoft's WOW32. Am i right or wrong please? I've been trying to get the set-up disc to install for what seems hours now. I cant even get the damn thing to recognise a NIC!!!! Please help a noobie and my thanks go out to you all |
Re: NTL and Windows XP Pro x64
Moved to Computers & IT as it's a PC problem, not an ntl issue. :)

Re: NTL and Windows XP Pro x64
I wouldn't image that there would be x64 drivers for the Ambit - I haven't even tried looking. But I have a VIA Nic (integrated on motherboard Abit AV8) and a Realtek chipset based PCI NIC. The Realtek worked out of the box but I had to get an updated driver for the VIA one.
I've been using x64 for around 6 months (Final build) and before that for months on the beta and never had a (broadband) related issue. In your post, you mention a "set-up" disc - by that do you mean the actual Windows install disc or the NTL one. Learn to HATE the NTL broadband setup disc with its Broadband *ahem* Medic. Just get the x64 drivers for your NIC and connect your modem via LAN, set NIC to DHCP and plug modem in. Thats it. |
Re: NTL and Windows XP Pro x64
If you're using ethernet, you don't actually install he modem on your PC, you install the NIC, and use that to connect to the modem, or a router. I would have thought that x64 should have drivers for most common NICs; otherwise I suppose it's down to whether the manufacturer has made x64 drivers available. And that's a lot more likely than ntl producing x64 compatible software. Some people would say they can't even produce XP/W2K/ME/W98 compatible software yet...
As MagicMan says, if your modem's already working with ntl, and you've got a working NIC, all you do is connect the lead, power the modem up and let it settle, then power the PC up. You should be connected. If you're connecting with USB, you will need to install the modem on your PC, and it's unlikely ntl will provide drivers for this for a while yet. Another reason not to use USB for your connection! ;-) And welcome to the forum! |
