Wireless BB

(sorry posted this in the wrong forum originally, apologies to all esp mods)

Hi,

Had NTL broadband for about 4 years now but am a bit of a networking noob so please bear with me...

I've get BB through a set top box and I've currently got a desktop with a network card straight into the stb.

I've got a laptop with a WiFi card and I want to set up a wireless network at home with both machines accessing it.

What equipment do I need to achieve this end?

TIA

Andy

Re: Wireless BB

all you need is a wireless router, something like a Linksys WRT54GS

your STB will need to be connected to the router with an ethernet cable. Your PC that is currently connected to the STB will need to be connected to the router (is assume it can be hardwired with an ethernet cable to the router as its currently hardwired to the the STB)

i guess you might need a second ehternet cable too

Cheers wicked.

yeah I can hard wire the current desktop to the router - I guess that saves me getting a wireless network card for it?

Yep that's right. No need for extra cards for the desktop.

All you need is the wireless router.

Plug that between the STB and desktop. Follow the instructions to configure it's wireless. Your desktop continues as normal, and now your lappy can connect wirelessly too. (at least the theory of it being that easy sounds good :erm: :D )

when you get your wireless router, make sure you read the manual particularly around security. You dont want other people sharing your connection or having access to administer your router.

using it "out of the box" will work but its not secure
