Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
I need to share files from 2 of my PCs across my WIFI network. I set file sharing on the appropriate drive so that the little hand appears on the folder! Nowadays with XP SP2 it seems that there is not an option to share all subfolders. Has something changed since I last set this type of thing up: is this an SP2 thing. Nowadays the subfolders are not shown as shared and there does not appear to be an option to share them. Do I haver to go through the tedium of arranging sharing for each sub folder?
Also, even when sharing is set OK I still can't get access to my families accounts. I used to do this, so what has changed? I need to do this to perform regular backups over my network |
Re: Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
Cant remember what you need to set in XP, but your problem of not being able to access the other machines could be that you have a firewall.
If thats the case, you need to add the other computers IP address to your allow list, eg. in Zone alarm adding the IP to the Zones list. |
Re: Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
Meld51 open up a command prompt (start -> Run -> CMD) then do ipconfig on all the computers....after that ping from machine 1 the ip of machine 2...if you get answers all the time then you go to run again and type in \\192.168.???.??? or whatever ip range you use in your network and you should see the other pc's folders

Re: Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
hello Halcyon
My network is firewalled by my router. There is no other firewall. XP firewall is turned off Hello levig I am able to ping my computers but this is something to do with XP I think......the problem is that I cannot share subfolders even thouigh the top folder is shared |
Re: Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
Can you access the share at all? You say you cannot access the sub-folders, but what about the root folder?
If this fails, take a look at your Workgroup in "My Network Places". Can you see both computers? If not, then you may have to share something on the other computer. Also, check the Workgroup is the same name on each computer, look for typos as they're a real pain! Check your firewall settings are allowing unresticted access between the Wireless LAN connections. Also, depending on what type of security you are running, you may have to set up accounts on both machines, i.e. each machine would have the other machine's account and login info as well as its own. Once you can see both machines in the Workgroup, you should be able to access the share. |
Re: Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
If you cannot see them in the workgroup in windows explorer top bar type in the path
\\computername\foldername and force the computer to look for the other one. If you know the IP address of the other PC in windows explorer type the IP address. |
Re: Network Access to Folders on another WI FI Computer
From Netork Connections, 'Set up home or small office network' on EACH machine.
