Sms Kettle

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/10/sms_kettle/

PG has designed a kettle that responds to text messages.

All well and good in theory, except for a couple of points:

1) You have to go in the kitchen *anyway* to make the tea. Why is pushing several keys, then send, easier than pushing a button (bearing in mind you would be in the kitchen anyway)?

2) The kettle won't text you when it's boiled.

3) In most houses, it's relatively quick to walk to the kitchen, and may actually be quicker than a text message.

Pointless. Funny though.

Re: Sms Kettle

You could do it 5 mins away from your house too - for when you get back.

Only joking jules,

But a coffee machine working of the same technology would mean a fresh pot, either when you arrive at work or when you get home :D

From John Leyden, our Hot Beverage correspondant:

"In the unlikely event England reach the World Cup semi-final next year, an SMS kettle may allow footy fans to turn on their kettle's slightly earlier than everyone else, thus marginally reducing a power surge that might otherwise strain the national grid

About the kettle: it's a gadget, it'll have shiney buttons.

It'll sell by the bucketful.

I like the comments sent in by Reg readers :

Such as

Is it me, or is it also missing the fact that you'll need to get up to fill the kettle with water in the first place? If it's anything like my one at home, every time I'm gasping for a cuppa and finally summon the energy to walk to the kitchen I find the kettle's empty and I've got to wait for the water to filter before I can even turn the damned thing on... Mind you, I guess if you ever want to burn down an ex's house while they're at work, repeated SMS's to a bone dry kettle would be a good place to start - not exactly an untraceable way of doing things of course tho ;)

It's because they just wanted to see if it could be done.Common sense has little to do with it.Never does with some techno nerds. ;)

Mind you, we have webcams because a bunch of nerds at MIT wanted a way to check if the coffee pot two floors down had coffee in it..

Didn't they used to sell automatic tea makers years ago? I am sure my old man had one which was attached to an alarm clock. This seems just as good, or even more useful.
