169 IP Address on Win XP
Hello, i was wondering if i could some advice on how to fix my 169 IP address.
I've got Win XP Pro SP1 running with Zone Alarm Firewall, AVG Antivirus, Adaware and Spybot search and destroy for spyware removal and 12 ghost popup blocker recently installed on ma PC. I had my internet conn work absolutely fine thru a DS108 Netgear router, untill yesterday with 192.168.0.2 assigned by router(192.168.0.1-default gateway)... i've sadly got a 169 ip now. I've tried release/renew, stopped and started DHCP, reset tcp/ip by the netsh command. tried system restore, no joy. Now i use peer to peer software on my PC called Kazaa lite and Bit torrent, now i donno if using that has knocked me out. Please Advice |

It's not clear whether this PC is wired or wireless. Is there a working PC wired in to the router? If so have you checked you are still getting a valid IP address from the modem? Can you check the DHCP table on the router? Is your wireless secure or has someone in the area nicked one of your DHCP addresses? HTH for starters. BTW, if the PC is wireless SP2 should make life easier! |
Re: 169 IP Address on Win XP
Thanks for your response. I've got an Acer 234 L Travelmate laptop with SP1 and a wired cat5(RJ45) cable connection about 5 meters in length going into the netgear DS108 router which has got 8 ports on it with only 3 users on it (including myself).
I've rebooted the modem and the router supplies internet connection the other 2 users without hassle, its just ma pc. I donno if my firewall is blocking the ports or affecting my dhcp server? Any good? |

Re: 169 IP Address on Win XP
The firewall should not affect the aquistion of an IP address.
The laptop recognises there is a connection at the other end (ie a router) but imo the problem is with the router. Have you tried another port on the router? Has the DHCP range run out? The routers config page should allow you to change it. |
