Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

You can also get an ftp 550 error code if the wrong credentials are supplied, so I'd check that there's not a typo in the login/password section within dreamweaver.

If all that fails, you could always resort to using a manual upload using a command prompt.

Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

Hi :welcome:

Not really sure why you are getting this error, but I can tell you how I've set Dreamweaver up to ftp upload to my webspace.

In the "Site Definitions",
under "Local Info",

"Site name" can be anything you want.
"Root folder" is the folder on your local hard drive where your web site pages are stored, e.g. "D:\Web\"
I've got the "Refresh local file list automatically" option ticked.
For the "Default images folder", I've got a folder called "images" inside my local root folder, and the path here points to that location, e.g. "D:\Web\images\".
The "HTTP Address" is the URL to access your webspace with a browser, e.g. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/<NTLUSERNAME>/"
I've also got the cache enabled.

Under "Remote Info",

Access is "FTP"
"FTP host" is upload.ntlworld.com
Login is your NTL USERNAME
Password is your NTL PASSWORD
You may have "Passive FTP" ticked, but I haven't. If you haven't, then your firewall has to accept connections from the FTP host. Passive mode does not require any further setting up of any firewall, but I've found the connection sometimes drops on very large files. I would recommend you start with "Passive FTP" ticked.

Under "Site map layout",

"Home page" is set to the "index.htm" file stored locally, e.g. ""D:\Web\index.htm".

That's about it. Don't forget, for your web space to work on NTL, you need an "index.htm" file stored in the root folder (i.e. not in a sub-folder)

Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear it didn't work.

I know you can sometimes have problems when you use the check-in and check-out option, then move sites. However, I don't think it will give this problem.

If this feature is on, it may be worth turning it off, then trying again. But I'm really clutching at straws now.

It might be worth ringing up customer services. When I first went onto NTL I tried for over a year to upload stuff, but couldn't, I tried various upload programs. I was only learning web stuff and it wasnt really important so never chased it up just used some free webspace.

Then I fancied doing a bit of a website and wanted to use my ntl space, so tried again, still no good, so I phoned customer services. It turned out my webspace had never been created on the server when I joined ntl, which is why I couldn't access it. It was sorted over the phone.

Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

I also had problems setting up.

Initially due to not having been allocated any space on the server (rectified by one of the Techies on here) and thgen because I didn't know about the index.htm

As you can get on with IE it suggests that the problem is linked to DW setup. I have had issues with Zone Alarm blocking the connection. Try turning your firewall off while uploading - DW may be blocked as a program.

HTH,

John.

Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

Can you check again that your FTP host in your Site settings in Dreamweaver is set to "upload.ntlworld.com"? (without the quotes)

It looks like you've got your webspace URL in there instead. I might be mistaken, but.....

Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

the test file uploaded by ntl shows the webspace is working, I don't use DW, myself, but it does look like a problem with that, rather than than the website, itself ??

Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

Not ever used dreamweaver, but from the error message it looks like you're trying to connect to a folder on the webserver that does not exist, specifically that you're entered the website address in the remote folder box (or root folder or whatever it's called) in dreamweaver when this should be blank or just / for ntl since files are stored in the root directory.

Re: Ntl Dreamweaver Ftp Help

A good point :tu:

It is called "Host Directory" under "Remote Info" in the site details in Dreamweaver. As simbr says, it should be blank.
