Cant install 2nd computer on telewest broadband
I am having a few problems setting up a second computer in the house.
It is an HP, the set up works perfectly until it trys gets to the DNS section (domain name services). It states that my firewall is set to the wrong configuration. I have closed my firewall down and tried to re-start the installation but it still doesnt work. Please could you give me a new tips with all this it would be great. many thanks Floydy |
Re: Cant install 2nd computer on telewest broadband
Best option is to get a router
Make sure it the correct one for Telewest (I don't now what Telewest uses, as i'm using NTL) |
Telewest 2nd PC problems
We have just installed telewest 512broadband, it is working perfectly on a laptop in the lounge, but i have tried to install it on a desktop upstair and it is not connecting.
It has said that telewest cannot find the correct DHCP?? I have tried ipconfig/all but have not had anything come up? Do you have any ideas? this is prooving very stressful now. many thanks Floydy |
Re: Telewest 2nd PC problems
Normally you can only connect one PC at a time to cable equipment. If you want to use the second PC, you cannot use the first without a home network.
To use one PC at a time, power off the modem, unplug one and plug in the second PC, then power up. To use both PCs together, or at least without having to unplug, etc, you need to use internet connection sharing, or ideally get yourself a router. |
Re: Cant install 2nd computer on telewest broadband
Hi,
have tried a belkin router but it still is showing problems with DCHP and DNS? Would it be easier to get wireless or am i sacrificing too much speed?? thanks |
Re: Cant install 2nd computer on telewest broadband
Wireless is unlikely to affect speed, significantly, just for browsing internet, provided your computer is reasonably in range of the wireless router. Basically even the slowest wireless standard is faster than the maximum current broadband UK service. If you shift a lot of files between your PCs wireless may be slowish.
If your PCs are in static locations, there is no real advantage to wireless, unless you have difficulty running ethernet cable through your house. Wired kit should cost less than wireless. However laptops thrive on wireless so go for that. __________________ The two threads on this matter are merged. |
Re: 2nd PC Connection Problems - Telewest Network
Are you using cross-over or straight-through cable to connect the second pc?

Re: 2nd PC Connection Problems - Telewest Network
Connecting the router is the same principle as connecting a different PC. Power down the modem (or STB however boradband is supplied), plug the router WAN port to the modem/STB. Plug the router LAN ports to the PC(s), or use the wireless. Power onthe modem/STB. Let that settle. Power on the router let that settle, power on the PCs.
If you continue to have problems, please confirm how your boradband is supplied (modem/STB), and model of your Belkin router. |
Re: 2nd PC Connection Problems - Telewest Network
get a second ethernet card a cross-over cable and another straight cable do it that way cheaper than a router
