Can't Ping or Connect to Email
I've just upgraded my computer to a Dell OS WINXP SP2, I've connected my telewest cable modem and have internet connection through the browser (IE).
However I can't seem to get my Outlook or Outlook Express to connect to my email account. The username and passwords are correct as I have tested the account on a differnet computer and internet connection. I've tried to ping sites through the CMD, however I don't get any response. I've turned off the Norton as I was told that sometimes can cause issues. If anybody has any ideas what the issue might be or some tips on how I can identify what the problem is I would be grateful. Thanks, balpal |

Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
Are you using IP addresses or server names to connect; which ones?
|
Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
I'm using the server names to connect to the email, http://xenon.webfusion.co.uk & http//smtp.blueyonder.co.uk.

Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
I can ping both of them so they appear to be alive. Have you checked the Windows XP firewall settings? It may be blocking the communication?
|
Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
are you actually typing "http//smtp.blueyonder.co.uk" as your email server in Outlook.
|
Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
The Windows XP firewall has been turned off, so that can't be the issue. I have been typing smtp.blueyonder.co.uk into the email account section, without the http://.

Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
Have you tried a "tracert smtp.blueyonder.co.uk". That should give a clue as to what is happening? Also, can you get to http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/ from IE?

Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
What error message are you actually getting in Outlook Express? Have you tried both sending and receiving? When you say you disabled Norton, did you disable the AV, the firewall, or both (assuming you have both components)

Re: Can't Ping or Connect to Email
Hi Guys,
Thanks very much for all your help, we figured out what the problem was. I was working on the problem remotely and when I asked to turn the Norton off they just disabled the Anti Virus part and not the internet security. Once that was off it started working like a dream. Thanks again for all the tips, balpal |
