More web proxy issues, oxford

Hiya, long time reader/lurker - first time poster and all that ;)

This transparent web proxy issue is really starting to annoy me. Is there ever going to be a fix? I rang NTL once the other night in a fit of rage - and as i suspected the helpdesk guy didn't have a clue what i was on about, and gave me one of the other proxy servers in oxford to use.

I can get round the problem with easynews by using port 81 for downloads, but i also listen to alot of streaming media - and enjoy watching videos from sites like Gamespot and Ign.

For sites like Gamespot there doesn't seem to be any way to tell GS's media player settings to use a different port or local proxy - so i cant view any streaming video's other than 300k quality. For someone on 3MB this really sucks.

Is there any acknowledgment of the problem by NTL? a post on there website or sommet? i would like to be compensated for this, as its really affecting my service.

Anyone else had problems with Gamespot / IGN / BBC radio1 streaming?

Cheers

Dave

Yes, I posted about my problems with Gamespy media streaming the other day, its got very poor recently, in windows media player you can set the http setting to use a proxy, don't know if it affects them or not but using that and switching proxies does seem to help, but as always you need to keep switching as none of them stay good for long :(

its because thousands of other people are doing the same cycling their proxies again and again, so when a good one is found it either trips up on its own or many have joined you bogging it down.

Am i reading what your saying right? because im trying different proxy servers, IM (and others like me) are to blame for nothing working?!

If the servers worked properly in the first place, there wouldnt be a forum full of people with the same issue's as me.

Fenlock, there is no need for you to be so rude. Kindly refrain from personal remarks in future.

Sorry, just didnt appreciate a pointless post informing me that i, and other's like me was basically the reason for nothing working at the moment.

Great.

Fenlock I am doing the same thing, I was blaming noone, but just stating a possible reason why a proxy works one day and then not the next.

Lots of us are doing the same thing, no blame, its the only way to get a (semi) decent browsing experience using NTL's inferior proxies.

Fair enough, i was a little on edge because it seems like the services i use the most are the worst effected - probably because they are the amongst the most popular (easynews/gamespot etc)

Really hope this gets sorted soon, im on hols for a couple of weeks now - would be nice to return and have it all fixed or better yet be on 10meg. Although ive had issues with a couple of random sites not working on NTL, but ok for others - ive never had problems like this in the 5 odd years ive been with them.

See what it's like in a few weeks i suppose.

Cheers

Fenlock, which proxy do you use by default ?
I'm also on 3 meg
Have you raised a responsetek form ? you need to report it to NTL.

I have the exact same issues as you with Gamespy/IGN streaming.
It could be a routing issue I suppose ?

cheers

Ian

Re: More web proxy issues, oxford

Yea, it could be..

Default one im assigned to at the moment is "oxfd-cache-2.server.ntli.net".

Ive tried all 4 oxford proxys and so far none of them have made a difference to the streaming or easynews download speed issue. Remember its not that i cant access these services, it's that they are going slow - so it could very well be a routeing issue Ian.

Easynews have a trace route page back to my IP (note ive removed my IP not sure if i should post it here or not)

Note i get packet loss as soon as the traffic hits oxford!?

What do you think?

EDIT: Where do i raise a responsetek form? is that sort of an online call log with NTL? not done that before :erm:

Re: More web proxy issues, oxford

Responstek form is here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/ntl.php

Have you tried using port 81 for easynews ?
http://members.easynews.com:81/

or changing your route:
http://members.easynews.com:81/route/

The route change on port 81 will also change your NNTP route.

See if that helps.

cheers

Ian

Re: More web proxy issues, oxford

Yea. tried all the port81 stuff. It did sort the problem a few weeks ago, but its not making any difference now, cheers though. Speed on downloads from HTTP on port 81 or otherwise just seem to drift between as low as 40kbps to 200kbps. I would normally max my connection solid at 370k - it is very spikey though, i could handle a constant 200k etc if it was stable.. but its just up and down constantly.

In which case the problem is unrelated to proxy servers, they only operate on port 80 (unless you have manually specified one in your browser).
