Windows 2000 Server - Remote Access

Hi..

Anyone a wiz on Windows 2000 Server that can help me set up Remote Access? This is the basics of the setup....

Windows 2000 Server.... on a network (Workgroup NOT Domain). Connected to the internet via Netgear ADSL Router. Our connection to the internet has been assigned a static IP address by our ISP.

Home user running Windows XP Home (or Pro) wants to connect into the Windows 2000 Server via Remote Desktop (the home user is the admin) to access the machine as if sitting in front of it. (As per Remote Desktop XP to XP).

Eventually I want to sort out VPN but one step at a time (unless someone can sort this at the same time!! ;)) Can someone point me in the right direction?

It's not free, but it's better than the "VNC" varients floating around...

Problem with using what is already in Windows 2000 Server and XP?

All you need to do is put in the IP address of the target machine and enter the relavent access details.. provided the account you use has local admin rights the software will be 'push' installed from his machine.

Because it would only work if the server/host was running XP or 2003 Server.
You can install the remote client software on virtually any version of windows, but the host has to be one of those two.

Nice - thanks.

But surely I am able to do what I want to do with what I already have got in the meantime. Or like everything MS - is it just too damn fiddly?

Unfortunatly not.
Like I said in my previous post, Windows 2000 Server doesn't support Remote Desktop as a host.

You can use Microsoft's Terminal Services (or Remote Desktop or whatever it's called now) in 2000 Server - I use it at work. It's very easy to set up and use.

Here's the link you need... http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000...l/default.mspx

OK... I am confused... what are all the Remote Access / Desktop options then? Puzzled now... or am mixing the two up.

The only inbuilt service that will work is Remote Terminal Service, but I doubt your admin will get what he wants using that.

Dameware is definately going to be the simplest option in that case ;)

Remote Access Service, is for controlling dial-up and other WAN connections.
