DVD writer in Safe mode

Hi All, not sure if this is in the correct area but here goes.
My gf's Da's PC will not boot normally to winXP, Boots straight to a Blue Screen error with 000000xxxxx00000 ( or something to that degree). I tried booting into Safe mode - successful.
Did a virus scan Using Norton and found that there was about 50-60 virsuses on it. NOrton although could only remove 37 of these.
I tried disabling everything in the startup group by going into MSCONFIG and still will not boot normally to winXP.
I have 2 Questions:
1. Is there anything else I can do?
2. If Not, can the DVD writer work in Safe mode so he can create a data disk with most of his stuff on it( about 40gbto back up).

Eagerly Await your responses.

Have you copied across the latest Norton virus sigs? Try using free/demo virus tools - one might succeed where others fail. If Norton identifies each virus you could look on their site for manual removal tips and tools. http://securityresponse.symantec.com/

I would be surprised if the DVD writer works in safe mode. Can you get a second hard drive from PC World and copy the data to this? (note - not certain that you can run disk management app in safemode - you may need to install a clean copy of XP on this drive.)
