Linksys WRT54G

Sometime in the last 3 weeks mine has decided to do a factory reset. I noticed last night that i was connecting to linksys (not my assigned SSID name) and that there was 0 security.

Now why would it do that?

you haven't had someone gain access to your wireless network by any chance? I assume you have proper encryption and passwords setup?

Mac locked and 128 bit WPA and changed password on the router. Unlikely.

Would a powercut do this?

Unlikely - I turn my router off every night and don't lose settings.

The only things I can suggest are -
Someone pressed the button (unlikely)
Hardware problem (battery? - more likely)

Along side a power cut? Possibly. Is this user servicable?

Not sure about self-service, but I doubt it. Is it within warranty?

Do you power it off at night like mine? If not, will it lose the settings if you power off now - to test whether the battery is still dead (assuming that was the problem).
