Unsecured Router
One of my neighbours has a Netgear DG834G which is unsecured. As ive just managed get on to their router and the admin page i was wandering if there was anyway i could find put who it is (without walking the streets to see where the signal got stronger) or contact them or leave a message that they would see rather than let some idiot change the password on the router and for example enable WEP

Re: Unsecured Router
If they have SNMP enabled you may get some info from that but I kinda doubt it...
You could try an educated guess. The problem of leaving them a msg is that you could actually get done for this, as it comes under the computer missue act or something like that, im sure someone will correct em if I am wrong... Another trick is, join there workgroup and look at the computer name, if its like most people I see they generally either leave it as the default, or call it there name.. thus giving you another clue, but again, illegal... |
Re: Unsecured Router
how would i find the name of their workgroup?

Re: Unsecured Router
You could try doing a "net send" message and see if that gets through, If there router is unsecured, they probably they haven't disabled it.
Go to the DCHP/active hosts page, and find out which IPs are active. then goto start, run, type in "cmd" and then type in: "net sent <ip> <message>" It should make a dialog box appear on their screen. |
Re: Unsecured Router
hmm only problem is nowadays net send is switched off....

Re: Unsecured Router
I had this, My laptop came with software called 'Configfree' which had a radar type screen, which had it toeards the edge of the screen.
I had one neighbour that it would possible belong to. I asked them, it was them and told them to hide the SSID. I also blocked there MAC/IP in my router. What wi-fi have you got its only going to be withing 3-4 doors from you. try knocking on the most likey. |
Re: Unsecured Router
i couldnt get net send to work on my own network with an ip address :(
