Airtunes and wireless internet

Hi,

I appear to have a problem regarding my PC / MAC laptop (wireless) and airtunes device.

I have the internet coming in to the property and connected to the Modem, which in turn is connected to the PC via USB.

I wanted to then run an ethernet cable to the airunes and make a wireless broadband device to share the connection for the wireless Mac laptop.

The problem I have is with the Airtunes device and the connection. The airtunes works ok and when connected to a stereo, allows me to beam music to share through my stereo.

I just can not get the connection to go through the modem and airtunes to share and surf on the wireless laptop.

This is driving me crazy and I have tried everything I can think of and still no joy.

The first time I plugged the airtunes in it all worked fine, and now nothing. I wonder if anyone knows of any issues with telewest and the use of airtunes??

Any advice and help would be much appreciated as this is now testing my sanity!!!!

Thanks

:welcome:
AirTunes = Airport Express? The small white power pack sized unit with an ethernet port, a usb port, a green / amber light and a 3.5mm jack plug.
If it does - I'll have a go - I think you are trying to do too much with the Airport at once.

Yep that's Airport Express not Airtunes as I stated in my post.

Just realized that one.

Thanks

Have you tried manually setting Telewest's DNS servers on the Mac? If you go to System Preferences and click on Network you should be able to enter them there. I'm on NTL so I don't know what they should be, but you should be able to get them by typing "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt on the PC (Start->Run and type "cmd" if you don't know).

So you have a PC and a MAC you want to connect to the AirPort. You also want this sited nr you stereo to stream music?

First. Do both the PC and the MAC have wireless ethernet (or in the case of the Mac an AirPort card) installed? If not what you are trying to do is a non starter.

If they do have you tried the obvious? Power down the Cable Modem, plug it into the Airport (by Ethernet), power down the Airport. Power up the CM, wait a couple of mins and power up the Airport.

Secondly, have you configured the AirPort, it should do two wireless PCs and Airtunes out of the box, so maybe pressing the reset button for 10? seconds and configuring back to factory default will solve the problem.

Let me know how you get on with these two suggestions.

Actually it sounds like he's trying to connect the AirPort to the PC's ethernet using Windows' internet connection sharing.

To the OP. If it helps, I have a USB wireless adapter (802.11b) at home that I'm no longer using. I can send you that if you like. That way you can connect the AirPort directly to your cable modem and let both computers connect wirelessly. This would also mean that you wouldn't have to have the PC permanently on in order to use the Mac on the internet.

Sorry to hijack thread, but never 100% understood what AirPort does !?

I have wireless net connection at home, but I believe that it can allow me to play iTunes over more than one PC or stereo ??

Which is not possible IIRC.
It can only be used as a Wireless Access Point, or iTunes in configuration with PC's / withouth a full blown AirPort (when it can be used as an expander and iTunes).
So, the OP either needs to Wireless his PC, buy a wireless router and connect the PC and MAC to that and configure the airport express to be itunes
Or take advantage of your offer.

What it does is act as a destination for your iTunes audio output.
Your configuration sounds much like mine.
You connect the Airport express to your stereo (3.5mm mini jack to Aux inputs) and configure it (ie. switch of the router in it, tell it where to look for an IP address) and your iTunes (after installin the disk that comes with the airport) will have a new menu option on the bottom right of the screen saying MyComputer or whatever you have named the Airport Express. You can then stream the iTunes playout to your stereo instead of to your PC speakers (wirelessly). Generally the stereo is somewhere you do not have net connectivity so this works fantastically.

As a bonus when you go travelling you can reset it, plug it into the wired ethernet port at a hotel, mates house etc and wireless their house so you can access BB while you are there.

To play iTunes over more than one PC you need both switched on, and to share the iTunes folder of the PC with all the ACC files on it. The second PC needs iTunes installed and you look in the shared area on the left bar of iTunes.
