Contract

I have a new lodger who has recently moved to SO area from Bristol.
She had their a telephone and broadband costing 27.99. However she had to move to SO due to relocation of her job. However their is no Telewest in this area so she can not continue the contract . She telephoned Telewest and they said to end her contarct she has to pay 260 and return her modem.
To me this is absolutely not acceptable i'v moved houses and if their was not a ntl service then th econtarct was finished end of story.
Can telewest deamnd this money if they cannot provide the service to their
customer? what can she do ?please

Re: Contract

The initial contract you sign to get the service includes a clause that specifies the minimum length of contract. (12 months for Telewest it seems: http://www.telewest.co.uk/html/termsandconditions.htm )
Quote:

General
Customers are required to commit to a minimum period of 12 months in respect of each service (e.g. a phone line, a cable television package or blueyonder broadband internet).
By agreeing/signing up to have the service you are legally bound to that minimum term of ownership regardless of whether you can use it or not.

They are perfectly within their rights to demand remaining fees on the contract before termination.

How long has she had it? It's possible they're overcharging.
