dorm room Lan
 

Hi i have friend just moved into dorm and inserted laptop into lan port in dorm. now network adaptor status is connected and ip has been addressed by dhcp etc but she can't access internet or update things like avg anti-virus etc as not showing internet connection. any thoughts? i need to get her on internet?

I assume that the LAN ports at the dorm are internet enabled.

I would suspect there is a proxy setting to be checked somewhere. Is the internet connection settings set to auto detect?

if its a uni dorm then she will need to talk to who deals with the network as u may have to pay for internet access i know a mate of mine does

il have to check with her, but yeah we have set IE and Firefox to auto detect and no luck. maybe her access is somehow blocked til she pay.s

Hi her information pack says "immediete internet access" and says its free. so any ideas why she can't access internet? again her IP etc is set-up and firefox is set to auto detect. but no luck?

She still may have to contact an admin to get connected, akane1984. Apart from anything else, they may not want unauthorised people having access to their network (think about it).

yeah very true. so as soon as they flick a switch to green light her connection she should be able to get online?

It may just be as simple as ask them if u need to enter any proxy settings.

Check the Uni wesbite, they usually have the settings on there some where.
