Bah. Internet, Networking and NTL.
 

Ok. I setup a new computer the other day, and have been left scratching my head over how to get it on the internet. I have 2Mb NTL Broadband from the set-top box, connected to this computer via USB.

I have tried alot of options of connecting my new computer to the internet by using this computer as a host. I've tried using ethernet cables and a hub, as well as directly hooking them up via a crossover cable, both to no avail.

I have also tried hooking up the NTL broadband cable directly into a ethernet card on this computer, but left me with no internet. I am currently making this post using the USB connection, and am left with my other comp with no internet. Help?

Btw, if you want to know my new comps specs:
AMD Athlon 64 2800+
DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250GB
PNY Verto nVidia 6600GT
2 x 512mb Corsair TwinX PC 3200 RAM DIMMs
Logitech MX 510 Mouse :tu:

You need to set-up each computer's mac address up with the stb if you want to plug each into the stb. I'm sure marge or someone wil provide you the details on how to do that.

As for sharing it then you have a number of options you could use ethernet to the pc form the stb then install a secondary ethernet card in the pc and use ICS (internet connection sharing) though you would then need that pc on all the time.

Best bet is get a router, they are next to nothing nowadays and you could even splash out a few quid more and get a wireless one. That way if you get a laptop you can connect it up as well.

Yeah, that helped a bit. I did try using 2 ethernet cards, but to no avail. This comp is on most of the time anyway so that wouldn't mater.

When I was trying to network them with the crossover cable, they didn't seem to see each other on the network. They were both assigned the same workgroup, but I am just confused by it all.

Sorry for the double post, but here's an update. I have the internet working on the other computer using the crossover cable, but only when Norton firewall is disabled on this computer. Norton has been playing up alot recently like not letting me use IRC, so I will switch to ZoneAlarm in few hours/days. Will post if there is any other troubles. Thanks ^_^

Right. Sorry for triple post, but another problem has popped up.

I got rid of Norton and installed ZoneAlarm on both computers. When I try to browse the internet on my new comp, it won't do anything and will just time out. When I disable ZoneAlarm on the host computer, I am able to browse the internet fine on it. I'm sure I have to allow Zone Alarm to allow this "network" but it won't let me for some reason :/ Help?

try using sygate firewall its much easier to configure & i find its a better firewall than zone alarm too. I am talking from experience as i got a laptop running through my main pc using bluetooth for networking
