setting up wireless router

Hi, Im using a Linksys WRT54G router, trying to connect it to a Fujitsu Siemens laptop with a centrino processor, the router seems to be working fine, and the wired pc is on the net, I can see the network at full signal from the laptop, but when i try to connect it just says waiting for network.... and then if I leave it it just says not connected.

Any ideas??

I reset the modem, and have pulled the power several times, tried the new firmware, reset to the old firmware. Disabled security.

Any idea whats wrong?

TIA

try running the network set-up util in xp. Trying checking the settings on the router (security etc)

How odd, its claiming I am not connected, but Im typing this right now off my laptop with no wires.

Weird......

Am using mac filtering instead of wpa, good idea?

Right.......is letting me stay on for a bit, then chucking me off, and then I reconnect, the whole time it claims I'm unconnected.

Really getting annoying now.

Any ideas??

1 Attachment(s)
the laptop and wireless router must have the same SSID and any security setting in the router must match the laptop settings

Think I sorted it, I had a large list of wireless networks in my favourites, I got rid of these and then re-added this one, and says connected now, has been fine thus far.

One further Q, is mac filtering sufficient??

don't just rely on MAC filtering

I agree - Minimum shold be MAC locked, SSID hidden and WEP encrypted preferred would be WPA rather than WEP...

I agree with the rest of your post but hiding SSID only gives more conenction problems than solves security issues IMO.

Change the SSID yes, hide it, not advisable imo.

I did hide it, couldn't connect any PCs, and had to Patch up to un-hide it.

I hide my ssid so that my daughter with the alien (access point thingy) cannot connect - lol
