BBC Channels on the Internet

The BBC's TV channels will be made available on the internet, BBC Director General Mark Thompson has confirmed.
He announced plans for the MyBBCPlayer - which will allow viewers to legally download seven days of programmes - at the Edinburgh Television Festival.
He said he hoped the site would launch next year.
Mr Thompson said that unless the BBC adapted "we won't deserve or get licence-fee funding beyond 2016... that is very definitely not our plan".
A simulcast of BBC One or BBC Two, letting UK viewers see programmes on the web at the same time as they go out on TV, is also planned.
Well it looks like things are gonna be getting interesting soon.

Agreed Paul.
Maybe a good test of the 10 meg NTL service when it rolls out?

umm nothing new about streaming, various tv companies do it worldwide, and I use approx 40gig a month on streaming.

BBC are palying catchup and its about time, I have been ****ed about paying the licence fee and not having bbc3 and other digital only channels.

Looks like the beta testing starts at the end of the month.

Wonder if I've been chosen?

From those screens the IMP software has not changed much since the trial I took part in last year.

I hope they using a better codec then they use now, I remember emailing bbc about their poor quality totp broadband clips, realplayer codec is no match for xvid and I also pointed out that by today's broadband standards 384kbkt and 256kbit are very low streaming rates.

This is why they're looking at multicast and unicast, I believe. :)

However, there has been a marked improvement to the Question Time 'watch again' thing-me-jig. Dunno what they've done to it, but it's much better for the (normally) sombre camera work used on the show (apart from the panning of the studio - that's a nightmare for the streams).
