National Budget 2026

With only days before Labour tells us how they are going to impoverish many of us even more, what are your predictions for the content?

I suspect that Personal Independence Payments (PIP) will cease as a cash payment to the disabled and will be replaced by an expansion of Disabled Facilities Grants. That means provision of walking sticks, Zimmer frames and wheelchairs. Or modification of kitchens and/or bathrooms, or provision of ramps, handrails and hoists in and around the home. All Means Tested, and not just on the claimants's savings or investments, but those of the entire household.

I also expect all disability assessments to return to face-to-face interviews with medical evidence requirements rising, especially in the capability to work area.

I cannot see how they will deal with many crossing the first Personal Tax Allowance threshold, except perhaps by ignoring that situation where the person only receives the State Pension and nothing else, excluding Pension Credit.

Garages are lobbying for an increase to the maximum that they can charge for MOT tests, the figures doing the rounds are around £95.

The garage I use still does the MOT for £45 . . and it takes 30 minutes.
Far as I'm concerned that equates to £90 an hour, which isn't far short of what a solicitor charges for a 5 minute appointment :D

I reckon any cuts to PIP etc would be by a way of reducing the numbers. Face to face assessments and medical evidence will be more involved. Also a minimum age PIP to apply for it but the likes of ADHD, anxiety and depression will be the ones they'll try to stop.

As the the fearmongering post above not very helpful.
