Moon Mission

Who is going to stay up and watch the Artemis II launch, due to take off 11:24pm uk time.

I was 7 months old when we walked on the moon, so will now see it and remember it

Just a flyby, but further than Apollo, so they'll become the furthest humans from Earth

Not exactly, the 80% comes from a weather prediction two days ago (they can’t launch if wind speed is above a certain level etc). Looking at the live feed from the launch site, it doesn’t look like weather will be a problem.

It looks a rusty old thing, wonder if the false tan colour was an instruction from the oval office?

That rusty-orange colour is the natural colour of the insulating foam, it is important to keep the heat out as the fuel is cryogenic, ie the liquid hydrogen is at something like -250 degrees C, and any heat that gets in will start to boil it off, so it needs constant replenishment, similar to the liquid oxygen.

In the past this would all have been painted to ‘look good’ but even the paint adds weight which you absolutely don’t want to have.

If you remember back to very early Shuttle flights, the tanks were painted white, something that was quickly dropped.

Can't help but be nervous watching this, it brings back memories of shuttle disasters.

Only one Shuttle ever had a disaster on lift off, the other broke up on re-entry.
