When we had analogue cable,I was very happy I was getting it in mono because alot of stuff to me SOUNDS MUCH BETTER in Mono...

The movie THE BREAKFAST CLUB for example (1985) -- It is UNREAL how much you can hear in the background on that movie if your hearing it on CENTER MIX (True Mono)

I got the official VHS tape of this movie and it WAS NOT DONE ON CENTER MIX (Even though its a MONO movie) and you cant hear ANYTHING in the background...

Alot of people dont like the hissing sound from stuff done on CENTER MIX,but it really is the BEST sound out there.......

I guess it wouldnt be a problem IF A MONO VCR PLAYED EVERYTHING ON CENTER MIX!! (You think it would) but mine plays left/right channel at a slightly lower volume if its not done on center mix which is stupid!!

That's impressive, I bought a VCR back in 1988 and even that was in stereo back then. You should curate your own museum of AV kit from a bygone era.

Mono is far from the best sound, it is the most basic. Our ears are designed to hear stereo and surround. It is why they are located where they are on our heads. We can identify the location of where a sound comes from.

Hearing a film is surround especially now with Dolby ATMOS is even more amazing how it can make you feel like you are right there in the movie.

Then for headphones you have spatial audio that can mimic surround sound really well.

Is centre mix even a thing in the way you mean it?

Mixing stereo in to mono is heresy. Usually centre mix related to the centre channel being used to anchor dialogue in movies or vocals in music and leaving all other sounds for the rest of the speakers.

Don't forget movies have been using stereo since the 1940s getting more widespread in the 50s. By the 70s it was common place with Dolby Stereo eventually evolving to Dolby Surround and now we have ATMOS.

Disney's Fantasia was actually the world first movie to feature multi track audio.

Well Centre Mix is what they used to do all VHS tapes in before 1981 or so...

It was a BETTER way to do it as they sounded better... Its hard to explain Stevie. On Centre Mix everything is combined... Everything is about the same level.....
