Back pain

I have been diagnosed with 5 fractured vertebrae, caused by osteoporosis, this is giving me a great deal of pain. My doctor prescribed strong painkillers, which only served to give me a sore stomach and made me violently sick. I am wondering if anyone on here could recommend a back brace for upper back, and do they feel it gives relief? Or any other remmedy they think might help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Braces and the like, plus appropriate physiotherapy, should be offered by your local NHS Trust. But seeing the way a neighbour was recently passed from pillar-to-post with no-one willing to help makes me wonder if your area might be more accommodating.

My wife suffered an arm fracture at the beginning of Covid, so had a bone density scan and was put on Calci-D tablets and a one-a-month dose of Ibandronic acid.

Incidentally, Ibandronic Acid has been unavailable for a couple of months. Our local pharmacy had no idea what was happening, but Google told me that production will not start until at least April 2026. I told our GP receptionist, and he told me to ask the pharmacist for an alternative, and then tell the GP so that he can produce a script for it. Pillar-to-post yet again.

Thank you for that Taf, like you say, what we should be offered and what we actually get doesn't compare. We think we have won the lottery if we are lucky to get a doctor's appointment down here. Meanwhile I have ordered a back brace. Will let you all know the verdict.

Swimmming ( or aquarobics) seems to deal with my back issues, but you might be beyond that with fracrured vertebrae.

Alternatively , spliffs. See "Andy", just outsde the Gents in Wetherspoons; he or his colleagues are in every branch. Bring cash, he likes that. Sadly he doesn"t do Nectar points....

Do pain relief gels do anything for it ? (such as Volterol).

Thank you Dude.

Back brace is going back, cannot get the shoulder straps to stay put, hence lack of support for my back. :(

Did someone put it on for you to show how it should fit properly? A mother I knew years ago struggled to get the one issued for her son to fit. She used pairs of rolled-up socks as padding. It was ages before someone pointed out that it was the wrong size and wrong shape.

Hi Taf, to be honest it didn't occur to me to ask someone to put it on for me. However I did look at the instructions and as far as I was aware I wasn't doing anything wrong. i just was not happy with it, so it had to go back. i'll know what to look for in future.

I use Ibuprofen 5% gel with an alternative 10% gel when spine very painful!
[Due to arthritis spinal pain]
Both prescription items only.

I used the same Ibuprofen gel for my lower back pain (arthritis) when I was a working man. I found that after progressive uses, the length of time it numbed the pain grew gradually shorter.

Since retiring I use nothing, I just try to limit doing things that place my body in an awkward posture . . (stop giggling Hugh)

You can buy both on Amazon, no prescription needed. :)
You can also buy the stronger diclofenac gel (i.e. 2.32%).
