Girl, 7, killed by falling tree in park

A child has died and another is in critical condition after a tree fell in a park.

Quote:

Essex Police were called to Chalkwell Park in Southend-on-Sea to reports that "a number of children were caught beneath the tree and suffered injuries".

Five children were taken to hospital, but the force later confirmed that a seven-year-old girl had died and her family were being supported by officers.

It added that another girl, six, suffered serious injuries and was in a critical condition.
Devastating for the families. :(

As you say devastating. I can't even imagine how you can deal with this. My heart goes out to the parents and everyone who tried to help.

One line from the updated report stands out

Quote:

The tree has been propped up by the metal props ever since I can remember
This was said by a 68 year old man, which suggests this tree has not been able to stand on its own for a very long time, and implies these "props" may have failed.

Yes and even though it wont bring her back, they should be sued big time for not taking care of it before sometihng like this happend!!

People always suffer for others uncaring and its a bloody disgrace

A few street trees around here fell in only light winds because the council stopped inspecting them for disease, rot or instability. Luckily, none hurt anyone when they came down.

I hope this very sad "accident" will spur on more responsible bodies to do what they are paid to do.

And yes, I get what you are saying, but sueing, for how much, just how much is your child’s life worth? A million, five million, ten million?

And also, suppose the parents were to sue and win, where does that money come from? Is it deducted from the salaries of all of the council staff, the salary of the Chief Executive, maybe from every member of the Council; or more likely, does a library or two get closed to fund it, a reduction in support for vulnerable people...?

Honestly, what do you think is the more likely scenario?

Dude111 30-06-2025 22:52

Ya I see what cha mean............

Money doesnt just come out of thin air........

Confirmation the tree was propped up.

A tree that collapsed and killed a seven-year-old girl had been propped up by supports for decades, a senior councillor has said.
The girl was visiting for the day, the other critically injured child is her cousin.
