IP Address change

good morning all

Is it rare for VM to change IP Addresses?

I was running an NDI session on Saturday with my normal public IP address which i have had for ages, then suddenly my Session stopped. After much confusion, and resets of PC, I noticed that my Public IP address had changed (so during Saturday morning).

Now i dont normally run NDI Sessions (once or twice a month) and have only being do so for about 3 months.

So was i just really unlucky? I would have thought if they were changing, it would be during the night. I use my internet daily, or so the router has not been left off for a week, which i know could effect it. I am also in Router mode (not modem mode).

I know you cant have static IPO addresses unless you go for a Business Account.

Re: IP Address change

If VM has offloaded traffic onto another CMTS at your normal headend, or even sent traffic to one of the other 52 headends, your IP will change.

If you click on the "connection" link in the header at the top of the page & look at the host line it will tell you the CMTS address you are connected to. The first few letters denote the location of the hub site.

Generally its not common, but does happen.
In my time with VM (20+ years) my IP changed a handful of times.
Once it changed twice in a couple of weeks, other times it remained constant for 2/3 years.

You can register for services like dyndns if you have the ability to support it which gives you a name and keeps track of your external IP and associates the two so if your IP changes so with the DNS record and you can still connect.

VM and Vodafone offer a static IP with their product for businesses. I guess that the nature of their networks
isn't suitable for larger numbers of static IPs.

ISPs using City Fibre all offer static IPs at a price, or, in some cases, as part of their basic offer.

AFAIK, Vodaphone offer it (at a price) to domestic customers, if you ask.
Plusnet used to do the same, not sure if they still do.

Think most IP's are "sticky" only time I've noticed my IP change is when I've got a new hub.

Mine changed a few weeks ago, normally I keep the same IP for donkeys years, so I guess some equipment changed at VMs end in my area.

Yes VM use 'sticky' IP addresses and they can change but rarely do.

Wouldn't it be nice if VM rolled out IPv6 like the competition have years ago? Sky BT etc and then everyone could have their own dedicated IP address.

Anyone behind the scenes have any news on if we can expect VM to roll out IPv6 this century?

Limited network knowledge but how would an IP address change mid session? I thought at the very least you would need a system reboot before it was released?

Re: IP Address change

You dont need system reboots to change IP.
VM uses DHCP for IP addresses (as do many devices and systems).
When its lease time expires, it will attempt a renew, and could, in theory, get changed for a new one.

DHCP will generally try to give you back the same address you had before, but sometimes that is not possible.
