Router options just moved
 

Hello, I've been quiet for a number of years yet still alive & kicking.

My question, over 21yrs I've been with virgin providing a sluggish 150 service (good riddens) moved over to Youfibre for 1 gig service, all that time with virgin using a tried & trusted wired Linksys router + switch which worked fine till I changed over.

1# Could I flash (firmware) the router to open software for future use? Yes I know it's 10/100 switch not a 1000+ Advice/tips

Its been a good while since I shopped for a router so what is out there preferred user wise from Linksys etc non wireless or with the wireless feature that I could permanently disable as I'm using a wired network. I've looked around used flashed Linksys gig versions/all bells & whistles types, the choices are rather near all the same but some any input will help. It has to be future proof so keep that in mind.

Just wanting to hear from others what works before I make the choice, staying away from 'smart'/wireless/cloud enhanced items.

Waiting to hear from anyone with a thought on this issue.

Stay away from Asus for a router, from personal experience they are as usual over priced tat that fails very quickly or soon after the warranty expires.

Personally when I get around to sorting my network out, I am going either Ubiquiti or MikroTik, unless I manage to get hold of a couple of Juniper ACX Switches.

If I was building a regular home network though I would be looking at Linksys or Netgear only, I would avoid all the Chinese companies, they cannot be trusted to be secure and keep your data private, which is a shame because the TP-Link Omada stuff looks good.

Nothing wrong with TP-Link, I think you're being a bit paranoid. I have used them for many years.

There is a reason Chinese companies are being banned from providing services and hardware to companies in the UK.

My 24 Port switch is a TP-Link switch, it's a dumb switch supposedly but I will be replacing it soon, might have a chance at some Juniper stuff but got to get back into work first.

Again, lots of paranoia, no real evidence there is any actual issue at all with TP-Link routers.

Asus performed really well during my days with Virgin Media 10 years ago. Netgear the SuperHub manufacturer was awful. I remember some firmware had security flaws, the wireless signal was broadcast without security for a moment during boot. Oh and it use to shit itself. On ap positive note they did create disco lighting.

Ubiquiti Unifi products are great for home setups. Used them for many years exlusively for all parts of the network; route, switches, cameras, controller, DVR... it's been absolutely flawless and works together so easily and nicely.

The guy that started the business used to work for Apple, to the concept of an ecosystem where everything just works together simply is very evident.

I have found the Ubiquiti Unifi range of kit to be briliant. I use it at work and at home.
