Nuclear Power

Sir Keir Starmer has pledged to "build baby build", as he announced plans to make it easier to construct mini nuclear power stations in England and Wales.

It would certainly help backup the less reliable sources of wind & solar, allowing gas usage to be reduced.

Even so, its likely to be many years before any would come online.

Merely guessing but it could be Rolls Royce Small Modular Reactors which have already been agreed upon and due to start production in 2030. Obviously it would be longer than that to actually start rolling out but looks promising.

Pretty sure it is these as the previous Tory shower were talking about them. It makes sense as the design is an extrapolation of the ones they put in our submarines.

That we allowed our leadership in nuclear power to wither is a national scandal and we need to do all we can to get it back, as soon as possible.

I agree. The lack of Infrastructure planning & investment over the last number of years is criminal. Of course, the reason why this did not happen is the need to efficiently spend a lot of public money (for a useful purpose) which was contrary to the philosophy and/or ability of the last party in power - see HS2 as an example

We just don't do long term planning and when we do, we cock it up. Have a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sizewe..._power_station for an example. Sizewell was chosen as a site to build a new reactor in 2010! :) Construction started in 2024 and will take 9 to 12 years

Long term planning doesn't happen as none of the clowns think further than the next election, and voters keep changing their minds.

Not so easy in Wales where one has just been blocked as it could have affected the speaking of Welsh.

Is there a Welsh language version of the Fail? It'd still be full of cr*p I guess.

How about "The Guardian"? That ok?

Planning inspectors appointed by the UK government recommended that the project be rejected in 2019, warning of its impact on biodiversity, the local economy, housing stock and the Welsh language

Much better, thank you. So this story is 6 years old , about planners employed by the previous Govt, and not 'just been blocked' as claimed above?

Also it was not a SMR which is being pushed out from 2030.

Aside from the above observations, I presume that is exactly the kind of B/S nonsense they intend to bypass.

Even more farcical in that case - there was already a Nuclear station next to the proposed site (closed in 2015).

Funny how that didnt affect the speaking of Welsh.
