Well, SOMETHING went right today!

This is at least partly a test, to make sure I have Internet access. To explain:

First, my Restart adviser couldn't attend to me because a newbie was late, and I got another one.
Then I wanted to deposit some cash in the bank...but they were closed.
Finally I got home with the new 6-way extension plug, replacing the 4-way because I need more than 4 sockets. I unplugged everything from the 4-way, plugged in the 6-way, and plugged everything back in. Everything was fine.

Except, most critically, the BT hub.

That was flashing purple, which tells you that you've disconnected your broadband. Well, duh. But worryingly, all the modem lights were off.

I tried switching off and back on again. Same result. I tried a factory reset. Nothing. I'd just about decided to call BT out later today, convinced something hardware-based had gone wrong.

These days my memory isn't what it was. It's like a - what d'you call 'em, a kitchen thing - sieve! That's it! But occasionally it does me proud.

Out of the blue I remembered an appliance from years ago that wouldn't work in one plug socket but was fine in another. Since all the lights were out it occurred to me that it might be a power problem. So I plugged the modem into a different socket on the 6-way.

It WORKED! The hub started flashing amber, then it lit into its usual steady blue! Result!

I've just tried an online game on my tablet - it's fine!

...and "Does the device currently have any power? Have you tried another outlet?"

And yes, we all know the apocryphal tale of the WordPerfect user who was too stupid to use a computer. Wasn't true, no, but anyone who's a) into computers and b) has dealt with customers, as I am and have, wishes it were, it's a great story! :p:
