It is a shame VM do not let you use your own box. Much better boxes out there

If you've had 5 boxes fail with hard drive faults, something environmental is causing it. Too close to a speaker maybe?

Samsung stopped making TV boxes some years ago.

Most speakers you would have near a TV are shielded so no magnetic field but even if they were not it would be highly unlikely for them to kill 5 HDDs

Would the box format a new SSD? is there an engineer menu that would allow for that?

They just aren't weatherproof, several of my garden tv boxes have failed. ;)

I was thinking vibration rather than magnetism. It does happen.

No, the boxes check they have an approved drive fitted.

If you were allowed to do that the channel owners would pull all their carriage agreements, as you would effectively have an unencrypted drive with recorded material you could remove & use elsewhere.
