Republican Congressmen can’t agree a speaker

Bizarre scenes in the US of A where about 20 MAGA Republican congressmen have decided to derail the process of electing a new speaker. The party’s preferred candidate is Kevin McCarthy but their majority in the house isn’t big enough for him to get the job unless at least some of the dissenters decide to stop mucking about and vote for him.

With stunning lack of self awareness, their preferred rebel candidate in the *fourth* unsuccessful round of votes today was Byron Donalds, a Trump fan and 2021 election denier.

The third vote yesterday was even more bizarre.

After Jim Jordan nominated Kevin McCarthy to be Speaker, he (Jim Jordan) was then nominated (over his own objections) by Texas Congressman Chip Roy.

Rumor being spoken of in local golf club is that Donald Trump , could be àked to stand ! In case people didn't know you do not need to be a member to be speaker

This is a consequence of the poor Republican performance in the mid-terms, wafer-thin majority. The MAGA Republicans were always going to cause trouble.

What's crazy is that they had already got concessions but they just want to cause disruption anyway, no goal other than destruction.

Yes your Golf club will have its finger on the pulse....
In that case I nominate Daffy Duck , nothing to say poultry can't be speaker either. Daffy's time has come.

Donny would be bored senseless as speaker, he's need a tivo/tv on his desk. Plus a video golf game. Plus some acquiescent young ladies... And unlimited cola, plus Maccy Ds...

If it's a golf club in Florida, that's probably a given - they'd elect him Pope...

Apparently, he's a RINO, so that's why they won't vote for him.

Well, 20 of them think that, and 200 don’t.

Or does that mean the 200 are RINOs too, and the 20 are the only true Republicans?

Oh, and Trump has said they should support McCarthy - does that make him a RINO?

I think their "logic" may not be consistent…

It's clearly a fractured Party. Enough Republicans feel he is sufficiently Republican to have nominated him.

So around 20 elected members of the Republican Party get to determine who’s Republican In Name Only, and ought to be given more credence than around 200 elected members of the Republican Party who have been content to vote for McCarthy?

Such is life in the alt-reality these utter numpties inhabit I guess.

How about Steam Boat Willie - at least he'd see things in black and white.

And on we go, again and again…

Quote:

House deadlocked as McCarthy fails again, loses ninth vote for speaker

Republican leader Kevin McCarthy’s ninth failed vote for speaker ensures the House will surpass the number of ballots cast a century ago. McCarthy has offered fresh concessions as he and his allies negotiate with GOP defectors who have denied him a majority vote in the chamber. The compromises, however, have failed to move his foes, sending him to defeat on a third day of voting.

No other business in the House can proceed without a speaker. The last time a speaker election took more than one ballot was in 1923, when Speaker Frederick Gillett (R-Mass.) was reelected on the ninth ballot.

At some point do the Democrats weigh in and put their fingers on the scales for McCarthy or someone else?
